For only one summer every 33 years, the legendary, enchanted, unmoored Chicksilog Island drifts into San Francisco Bay, and anchors itself just off the coast of Point Richmond.

Chicksilogs, the devastating women of the island, are known for their fierce warrior strength and romantic beauty, their mild derangement, and lack of sound critical judgment. They have a deep fondness for all things orange.

Unique aspects of island culture include decision-making by tribal spelling bees, and conflict resolution through Flipflop On A Stick battles. In a life-imitates-art moment recalling Paul Gauguin’s epic “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?,” the Chicksilogs find themselves asking those very same important questions on a regular basis!

In a gesture of gracious goodwill during their 2005 drift, the Chicksilogs shared their private universe of femininity with Richmond Art Center visitors in an effervescent adventure installation of video, paintings and drawings of the exploits and foibles of their simple island culture.
