Fumakilla

2005

Fumakilla video still (slapping)

Fumakilla (TRT 5:00 min) was designed as a two-monitor (or dual projection) piece . This is how it would look with both pieces playing together.

The left screen is a vaguely tropical setting, where I'm having one hell of a time on my own, first slapping at imaginary mosquitoes, then scratching my bugbites obsessively, before finally obliterating myself with DEET insect repellent. The right screen is a time-lapse shot of a mosquito coil (an incense-like bug-repellent common in South East Asia) burning down to nothing but ashes.

Fumakilla is a study in self-defeating paranoia, and mythologies of safety and protection: the unseen things that we try to protect ourselves against are nowhere near as dangerous or toxic as the things we use to protect ourselves with.
