Senior Class, Prom 2002

The high school I worked at in San Francisco was very small, very quirky, and very young. It held its very first Prom in spring 2000, at which point the school counselor and I decided that it was entirely appropriate for us to dismantle any potential for propriety or decorum by performing annual Prom Interventions for the benefit of the youth of San Francisco. Years 2001-2004 were the most effective.
2001: two Prom Avengers descended upon the ballroom, resolving prom emergencies with items from their utility belts such as corsage pins, curling irons, breath mints, and personalized counseling.
2002: Grandmothers Mildred and Edie showed up at the St. Francis Hotel for their SENIOR Prom.
2003: (a few months after the US started bombing Iraq), officers from the Department of Promland Security arrived, to “stabilize” and “liberate” the good people of the Hotel Nikko.
2004: Without revolution, there can be no Prommunist Party: Che and Fidel bring a little “Hasta la victoria...siempre” to Prom.
