Fine Arts/Art History Syllabus

Welcome to Fine Arts/Art History! One year of Fine Art credit is a UC requirement, hence, one year of Fine Arts/Art History is required at Leadership High School. This course is an interdisciplinary study of visual art and culture, approached two ways. The fine arts portion of this class is an introductory level studio class. The art history portion of this class is a college-level survey of the development of modern visual culture and ideas. Too often, art and art history are taught separately, which makes it difficult to fully appreciate either one.

It's my hope that you find this an entertaining, enjoyable, and challenging class. Just as your English class is a balance of reading, thinking, and writing, Fine Arts/Art History is a balance of seeing, thinking, and art-making. Art is a language, like any other. Whether you?re responding to it or creating it, you're absolutely surrounded by visual language and ideas every day. The study of fine art and art history, whether you intend to have a career in art or not, will truly deepen your understanding and appreciation of the visual, creative, vital modern culture we live in.
